Jay Wei founded Optovue, Inc., in 2003 to develop the next generation of Ophthalmic OCT instruments. His vision in the clinical use of OCT technology has resulted in the first FDA cleared Fourier-domain (spectral domain) OCT system, RTVue®. Jay has been working in ophthalmic instrument development and management since 1992, and he has pioneered the commercialization of optical coherence technology for ophthalmic diagnosis since 1994.
Prior to founding Optovue, Jay was a Director of Advanced Development and an OCT Program Manager at Carl Zeiss Meditec (Humphrey Instruments). He led the OCT development from ground zero in 1993 and delivered all prior generations of OCT products to the market.
Jay received his Bachelor of Science in Electro-physics from the National Chiao-Tung University in Taiwan, and a Master of Science in Applied Optics from the University of New Mexico. He has been granted over 30 patents in ophthalmic devices and has published research in over 10 peer-reviewed journals.
David joined Optovue in February 2012 as Chief Financial Officer and was promoted to President and CFO in March 2013. Prior to this, he was the CFO at Cyntellect, where he provided financial leadership for the sale of that company’s LEAP and Celigo product lines in 2011. He was also CFO for SynergEyes and CFO for Laser Diagnostic Technologies until its sale to Carl Zeiss Meditec in December 2004.
David has also held positions in finance with Alaris Medical Systems and Metracor Technologies, and he began his career at Deloitte & Touche as a CPA.
David received his Bachelor of Arts in Business and Accounting from Arizona State University.
John Hawley joined the company in 2008 with more than 30 years of experience in ophthalmic diagnostic instrumentation, service, sales, marketing and strategic planning. Before joining Optovue, he was a Vice President for Heidelberg Engineering, where he was responsible for building its U.S. business over a 15-year period, growing annual sales from $500,000 to $28 million. Prior to this, John was a Regional Sales Manager for BioRad/INTERZEAG. He has also held management and manufacturing positions for Cilco.
John was a member of the Royal Australian Navy for eight years where he attained the rank of E6, First Class Petty Officer.
Judy joined Optovue in 2015, bringing over 25 years of global product launch, program marketing and product development experience in the medical device and healthcare industry. Prior to joining Optovue, Judy was Vice President of Marketing for Cervel Neurotech, Inc., an early stage neuromodulation company where she supported the business development and fundraising efforts. Before this, she was an independent consultant in the electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, radiation oncology and ultrasound industries, with clients that included BioVentrix, Hansen Medical, Calypso Medical, Edan Medical, Zonare, Thermedical and VytronUS.
Judy also served as Vice President of Marketing for Hansen Medical, Inc., where she supported the company’s initial public offering, established the marketing department and played a key role in the global launch of the Sensei™ Robotic Catheter System. Previously, she served as Director of Marketing at Siemens Medical (Acuson Corp).
Judy holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from California State University, Chico, and a Master of Business Administration from Santa Clara University.
Marshall joined Optovue in October 2013, bringing with him over 25 years of operations experience in medical device and biotechnology within the ophthalmology and cardiology segments. Prior to joining Optovue, Marshall was a Director of Operations at Topcon Medical Laser Systems, where he was responsible for all aspects of supply chain, manufacturing engineering, ERP system and manufacturing management. Before this, he was Director of Operations for OptiMedica, overseeing the supply chain, manufacturing, operational ERP systems and manufacturing engineering functions.
Additionally, Marshall was Director of Operations for IRIDEX, and he held materials management positions at both Baxter Healthcare and Coherent.
Marshall received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of California, Irvine, and a Master in Business Administration from National University.
Dr. Tony Ko has over 15 years of experience developing instrumentation and imaging solutions for the medical device industry. He joined Optovue in 2008 and was promoted to Director of Advanced Development, Senior Director of Engineering and then to his current position of Vice President of Research and Development. Prior to joining Optovue, he was the Manager of Optical Engineering for Lightspeed Genomics. Before this, Dr. Ko was the Senior Optical Engineer for FoxHollow Technologies, which was acquired by ev3/Covidien.
Dr. Ko earned two Bachelor of Science degrees in Bioengineering, and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley. He received a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, as well as a Ph.D. in Medical Engineering and Medical Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
During research for his Ph.D., Dr. Ko was instrumental in the development of ultrahigh resolution OCT technology for ophthalmology. He has published more than 40 scientific journal articles and has received multiple U.S. patents in medical imaging.
Ed joined Optovue in 2015 with over 25 years of medical device experience in small, private ventures as well as larger public companies in a variety of healthcare sectors. His senior management responsibilities have included regulatory, quality and clinical affairs at Asante Solutions, Baxano (TranS1), Conceptus (Bayer), and Prolifix Medical. Prior to this, Ed was employed in various management and staff positions at PercuSurge (Medtronic), Cardiac Pathways (Boston Scientific), Advanced Cardiovascular Systems (Guidant) and CooperVision Surgical.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Irvine, and a Master of Arts in Management from the University of Redlands.
Gordon joined Optovue in April 2009 with over 30 years of financial and operations experience with public and private companies in medical device, high technology, business-to-business Internet applications and biotechnology. Prior to joining Optovue, Gordon held the position of Vice President of Finance for Ink2, Consensus Orthopedics and IBM/Mylex. He also held senior finance positions at The Permanente Medical Group, Toshiba, Millipore and Litton/Applied Technology.
Gordon received a Bachelor of Science in Food Science from the University of California, Davis, and a Master of Business Administration from California State University, Hayward.
Dr. Qienyuan Zhou has 20 years of experience in the ophthalmic imaging device field, including research and development, software-based clinical applications development, clinical research, and device clinical validation. She joined Optovue in February 2010 where she is responsible for clinical affairs, clinical applications, and algorithm development.
Prior to her current position as Vice President of Clinical Affairs, she worked as Senior Director of Clinical Research. Before joining Optovue, she was Senior Manager of Advanced Development for Carl Zeiss Meditec, and prior to this, she held the position of Director of Research & Development for Laser Diagnostic Technologies, Inc.
Dr. Zhou holds a Bachelor of Science in Optical Engineering from Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Miami. She has received multiple U.S. patents and served as principal investigator on multiple NIH SBIR grants.
